The Community Development Department is currently recruiting for one (1) Part-time, Temporary, Park Ranger
Status: Part-Time, Temporary (up to 960 hours)
Assignment: Limited Term
Pay: $27.69 - $38.98 Competitive hourly rate (non-exempt)

THE OPPORTUNITY
The part-time Park Ranger plays a key role in ensuring the safety, cleanliness, and overall experience of the City’s parks and recreational facilities. This position conducts regular patrols, enforces park rules and City ordinances, and assists visitors by providing information, guidance, and basic emergency support. Park Rangers also complete reports, coordinate with other City departments, and help with light maintenance or special events as needed. The role requires strong public interaction skills, a calm approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all park users.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATES
The ideal candidate for this part-time Park Ranger position is a responsible, community-oriented individual with experience in park security, maintenance, or similar public-facing roles. They demonstrate sound judgment while enforcing park rules, maintaining safety, and providing excellent customer service to visitors. This candidate communicates clearly, writes accurate reports, and remains calm when handling conflicts or emergencies, including administering basic first aid and CPR. They are comfortable patrolling outdoor areas, performing light maintenance, and working independently while collaborating effectively with other City departments.
Bilingual ability and coursework in Administration of Justice or security operations are desirable. Above all, the ideal candidate is dependable, professional, and committed to supporting safe and welcoming City Park spaces.
Minimum And Desirable Qualifications
A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined above is through graduation from high school or a G.E.D. equivalent and two years of related experience, preferably in park security, park maintenance, or other related activities with heavy public contact. Supplemental course work in Administration of Justice or security procedures and operations is desirable,
Bilingual ability (English/Spanish) is desirable.
Because this position is considered safety sensitive, individuals selected for hire must pass a comprehensive background check, psychological evaluation and medical examination.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy.
Advanced first-aid and CPR certificates or the ability to obtain them within six months of date of hire.
Must successfully complete and meet certification requirements of California Penal Code 832 Peace Officer Training, and Government Code Section 1031, a course on the laws of arrest and search and seizure, within six months of date of hire
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
P ark Ranger is a public safety position responsible for the positive enforcement of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to Parks and Recreation Department property. Park Rangers patrol and monitor parks and related facilities to enforce park rules, regulations and City codes, perform minor maintenance, record and report violations of regulations and ordinances governing the use of the park facilities, and respond to emergency situations. Park Rangers are distinguished from Senior Park Rangers in that incumbents in the latter class provide lead work direction and day-to-day oversight of Park Rangers and security programs.

The Community Development Department provides a variety of development and business services related to enhancing the quality of life in the community. The Community Enhancement & Neighborhood Services Division is responsible for enforcing codes related to neighborhood nuisances, health & safety, substandard housing, vehicle abatement, illegal dumping, improper signage, parking control, and weed abatement. Community Enhancement staff also manages the City’s Rotational Tow Service, Graffiti Restitution, Shopping Cart Retrieval program, and the Foreclosure Registration Program.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
Applicants possessing the MOST DESIRABLE qualifications at each level, based on a screening of required application materials, including the completed Supplemental Questionnaire, will be invited to continue in the selection process.
RECRUITMENT PROCESS: Human Resources (HR) reviews all application materials to determine whether candidates meet the established minimum and preferred qualifications once the position has closed. Those who qualify will be advanced to the next stage of the recruitment process. All applicants will receive email notifications regarding their status.

Eligible List: Once the appraisal is complete, HR will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
