HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
City of Riverside
THIS IS A PROMOTIONAL RECRUITMENT AND ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF RIVERSIDE EMPLOYEES.
The City of Riverside is accepting applications from current employees for the position of HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR to fill one (1) vacancy in the in the Street Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. The eligibility list established may be used to fill the current and/or upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to one (1) year.
Under general supervision, Heavy Equipment Operators operate heavy construction and maintenance equipment in performing excavating, grading, or related operations according to required standards; perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks; and do related work as required.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operate a motor grader with scarifier, blade and other attachments in the maintenance and repair of streets, alleys and gravel roads; blade street and shoulders to obtain proper grades, crown and slopes.
- Operate heavy crawler or large rubber tire tractors equipped with bulldozer blades and other attachments used in moving earth and other materials, and in maintaining roads, a gravel pit, clearing waterways or flood control channels.
- Operate a crawler type crane to set such things as trees, street and light poles and water pipe; operate a power shovel and attachments in excavation and loading work.
- Operate a self-propelled loader, black-top paving machine, backhoe, various street rollers, skid-steer loader, oil distributors, water tanker, motor sweeper and vactor.
- Perform minor servicing to assigned equipment.
- Perform semi-skilled maintenance tasks, including operating a boom machine and perform heavy manual labor.
- Clean water warp or flood channels as needed.
- Report hazardous conditions.
- Participate in special City events as required.
- Respond to public inquires.
- Respond to emergencies as directed by Public Safety.
- Assist in storm control activities such as placing of sandbags and barricades and picking up of litter or debris.
- Lead a small crew of employees engaged in various street maintenance activities as needed.
Recruitment Guidelines: Education: Equivalent to the completion of twelfth grade.
Experience: One year of experience in the operation of a variety of heavy and moderately heavy automotive and related equipment.
Necessary Special Requirement
- Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate, valid class "A" California motor vehicle operators license, with applicable endorsements.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
- Current possession of an appropriate, valid class "A" California motor vehicle operators license, with applicable endorsements.
